Team Link NAGA New England Champions: Overall Team Champions for 17th time

NAGA New England Champions

Team Link is known for having some of the best grappling in Western Mass and New England. The North American Grappling Association, or NAGA, has posted the team results for New England Grappling Championship from January 25th 2014 that was held at the West Warwick Civic Center in West Warwick, RI. Team Link had an impressive showing winning the overall Adult Team title and the Overall Kids & Teen title. “We want to thank everyone that went to compete and those who went solely to show support for their family, friends and teammates. A chain is only as strong as it’s links. We are not just a martial arts school; here we build champions!!!” says Marco Alvan owner and head instructor at Team Link in Ludlow MA.

Only a fraction of Team Link members actually compete. Competition is not a requirement and most train for different reasons. Some of the reasons are to get in better shape, become stronger, increase cardio, increase conditioning, use time training as great stress reliever, or it is just something they always wanted to do. When you surround yourself with champions it gives you motivation. When you surround yourself with people that want you to become better, there is no other option other than to get better. “We can not progress as whole unless everyone progresses individually as well. Team Link is a teaching school. Everyone is taught how to teach. If you can not explain something, then you do not really understand it. We pride ourselves in having one of the greatest learning environments you can find.” says Marco.

New England’s Only UFC Heavyweight Fighter Gabriel Gonzaga to Fight Stipe Miocic at UFC FOX 10 in Chicago

Gabriel Gonzaga vs Stipe Miocic

Gonzaga vs Miocic

A heavyweight matchup between Gabriel Gonzaga (16-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) and Stipe Miocic (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is the latest addition to the UFC’s first FOX-televised event of 2014.

UFC on FOX 10 takes place Jan. 25 at United Center in Chicago, the third straight January the venue has hosted a FOX show. The main card, including a Benson Henderson vs. Josh Thomson headliner, airs on FOX following prelims that are expected to air on FOX Sports 1 and stream at MMAjunkie.

The 34-year-old Gonzaga left the UFC in 2010 after struggling through a 3-5 stretch. However, after a year away from the sport, the submission ace returned to the sport and is 5-1 in his past six fights. All five of those victories have come by finish, including consecutive first-round knockout wins over Shawn Jordan and Dave Herman.

Meanwhile, Miocic opened his career with nine straight wins to open his career before suffering a September 2012 loss to Stefan Struve. He’s since rebounded with an impressive decision win over Roy Nelson at June’s UFC 161 event.

With the addition to the card, UFC on FOX 10 now includes:

Benson Henderson vs. Josh Thomson
Darren Elkins vs. Jeremy Stephens
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Stipe Miocic

Team Link Fighter to Semi-finals at Bellator Middleweight Tournament

Perry Filkins defeats Jeremy Kimball at Bellator

Perry Filkins defeats Jeremy Kimball at Bellator

Looking to train MMA in the Springfield MA area. Team Link is the only school in Western Mass to have fighters in the UFC and Bellator. Go to www.linkbjj.com for more info on training.

This is how the fight went down. Perry Filkins fought through three tough rounds against Jeremy Kimball and was able to walk out of the middleweight tournament opening round with a very late submission victory over Jeremy Kimball. The fight opened with a flurry of punches by both Kimball and Filkins with Kimball getting the better of the exchange. Kimball continued to work the leg kicks early to keep Filkins away from him. Filkins eventually started using a left hook to counter the low leg kicks. As the midway point of the first round drew both fighters started slowing down a bit. Kimball still continued to use his leg kicks to keep Filkins away from being overly aggressive. As Filkins tagged Kimball, Kimball shoot in and scored a take down, but wasn’t able to do anything with it. As the round came to a close Kimball shoot in again and put Filkins to the mat. Once again, Filkins got right back up off of his feet and continued his aggressive striking but was eventually taken down again. The round finished with both fighters standing and trading blows and a final take down by Kimball. To open up the second both fighters continued the aggressive onslaught. Kimball once again tried working a take down, even using some foot stomps, but wasn’t able to secure anything. As the round wore on, Filkins scored a nice take down on Kimball and started working a nice half guard but eventually Kimball worked out of it and grabbed a jumping guillotine. Filkins defended and slammed him to the mat before he could sink it in. As the second round came to a close both fighters were exchanging heavy blows when Kimball went for another take down which Filkins reversed and grabbed full mount. With seconds left Filkins kept hammering blows but was unable to stop him as time ran out. The final round opened with both fighters once again exchanging. The pace clearly slower this go around with the late flurry in the last round. As the round wore on neither fighter was really engaging at all. Midway through Filkins started to land some strikes which was pushing Kimball back against the cage. Filkins seeing that Kimball was tiring went in for a sloppy take down and landed in full-guard. After a couple minutes of working Filkins grabbed Kimball’s back and went for a rear-naked-choke with about a minute left. After a few seconds of posturing, Filkins was finally able to secure the tap and the victory. Perry Filkins improved to 8-1 with the win and most importantly advances to the next round in the Bellator middleweight tournament.

Fixing the Most Common Armbar Mistakes

Hip movement is the heart and soul of Brazilian jiu jitsu and grappling in general. When trying to lock a submission such as the triangle or the armbar or even the triangle armbar (serious ninja mystery!) then the most important factor for success is getting your engine (the hips) aligned to the joint you’re trying to attack (the elbow (armbar) / the neck (triangle))

When attacking with an armbar from guard, use the foot on the hip to align your hips with the elbow you're attacking

When attacking with an armbar from guard, use the foot on the hip to align your hips with the elbow you’re attacking

Question: Where does red in the second picture need to move the hips to put on a triangle-armbar?

Answer: You’re hips are always chasing the joint you’re trying to break, in this case the elbow, so to his / her left

If you're countering the posturing escape against the triangle choke with an armbar, it's very important to move your hips out and align them with the elbow you're attacking

If you’re countering the posturing escape against the triangle choke with
an armbar, it’s very important to move your hips out and align them with the elbow you’re attacking

In the first instance, get your foot on the hip, or on the mat if you have long legs. That’s not the main issue. Why you put the foot down is. You put it down so you can: chase the elbow, both by rotating but more importantly to bridge your hips up into the armpit to trap the elbow, while the second leg climbs and clamps on their back. Which way do you move your hips? You chase the elbow. If it’s their right arm you’ve trapped, you scoot your hips to their right (your left) and both align yourself behind the elbow and make sure it’s high on your body and not almost out past your groin.

Always chase the elbow, or whichever joint you’re trying to lock. Everything else should fall into place from there.

I will leave you an excellent video on correcting arm bar mistakes:

Gabriel Gonzaga will fight at UFC 162

Gonzaga vs Schaub

Team Link will return at UFC 162

An unspecified injury has forced heavyweight Shane Del Rosario to withdraw from UFC 162. As a result, Gabriel Gonzaga has stepped in to fill the void and face Dave Herman at the July 6 event.

The UFC announced the changes late on Friday night.

Gonzaga will have about five weeks to prepare for Herman.

The fight is likely a pivotal one for the UFC career of Herman, who has lost three straight and is also coming off a suspension for a failed drug test that flagged him for marijuana usage.

Herman (21-5) has been finished in three straight fights. He was most recently submitted by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 153. Prior to that he suffered a knockout loss at the hands of Roy Nelson, and another TKO via Stefan Struve. His only UFC win was a Fight of the Night knockout over John Olav Einemo in June 2011.

Gonzaga (14-7) is seven weeks removed from a knockout loss to Travis Browne at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale, a defeat that snapped a three-fight win streak. He was just removed from a mandatory medical suspension on Wednesday.

UFC 162 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will be headlined by a middleweight title match pitting Anderson Silva against challenger Chris Weidman.
